Shirin Nashat's TED Talk is both moving and inspiring and would provide such rich discourse about Duncum's 7 Principles for Visual Culture for secondary and post-secondary students (and non-students.) Power, ideology, and representation are readily accessbile topics for discussion, and Nashat's work clearly integrates multimodality, but the principles of intertextuality, seduction, and gaze would yield incredibly rich dialog also and could be introduced in a "VTesque" fashion. How are we westerners seduced by images of Islam? How is our gaze colored by politics, religion, and recent events? I really want to know more about this artist whose work speaks to creative resiliencey and the artistic voice that for Nashat, as a woman and as an Iranian in exile, refuses to be silenced.
